Most people tend to think of Mallorca as a beach holiday destination, and whilst during the summer months it certainly is, for the rest of the year the island offers perfect temperatures to explore all the wonderful beauty the island has to offer. From postcard perfect towns to incredible limestone mountains, not to mention the stunning coastlines.
Even if you have been to Mallorca several times, there is always more to discover, starting with some of not only Mallorca, but Spain’s most beautiful towns. Here are our favourites:
Valldemossa
One of the prettiest villages on the island, nestled amongst the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains, yet only 20 minutes from Palma, Valldemossa is a beautiful place to wander around, almost like stepping back in time. The narrow cobbled streets, lined with charming crumbling stone houses, cafés and restaurants make for picture perfect material.
This beautiful village has captivated artists for decades, including famous composer Frederic Chopin, who spent winter in 1838 at the Royal Palace ‘Cartuja’ which is now open to the public and includes a museum in his honour.
Deia
The hill-top village of Deià has always attracted artists, musicians and creatives, however you’re more likely to see it as a wealthy playground than a bohemian region. 1930’s English poet Robert Graves is buried in the village graveyard, which is visited by many of Hollywood’s stars year on year.
The town is made up of cobbled streets and pretty stone houses as well as offering the most stunning mountain and sea views. You’ll also find the infamous Michelin-starred restaurant Racó d’Es Teix.
Fornalutx
A charming place to explore is the pretty hill-top village of Fornalutx with its cascading stone houses and quaint tiled red roofs. These cobbled streets are lined with some fantastic restaurants offering some of the most picturesque views on the island.
The area is particularly popular with hikers as many of the mountain trails start at the village, as well as tourists exploring the town, followed by a walk through the citrus groves leading down to the incredible, must-visit town of Soller.
Soller
Voted one of the prettiest towns of not only Mallorca but Europe is the charming gem, Soller. You can reach this village either by car or the beautiful old wooden train from Palma which boasts unmissable views of Mallorca en-route.
EC recommends people watching right in the centre square over look Sant Bartomeu church in one of the local tapas restaurants whilst sampling some of the local dishes with the Angel d’Or liqueur invented by local farmer Miguel Capó.
This village is like a time warp with its orange tramway which takes you to the port where you can spend the afternoon wandering around boutique stores surrounded by boats on one side and mountains on the other.
Banyalbufar
The western coastline of the island is known to be a showstopper. This is where you find the breath-taking town of Banyalbufar, which is made up of terraces carved out of the hillside dropping down to Mallorca’s Mediterranean sea.
This windy town carries hundreds of years of history as was built and inhabited by the Moors many moons ago and it is definitely worth a visit.
Santanyí
This beautiful golden sandstone town was once fully walled to protect against pirates, however today only the entrance wall remains. The town is bursting with traditional Mallorcan architecture, making it popular with artists taking inspiration from it.
Every Wednesday and Saturday you will find yourself in the hustle and bustle of the village market which is a great place to while away the day and purchase local hand crafted pieces of art.
