From the modern city of Palma to old, but incredibly picturesque rustic villages including Fornalutx and Deia, to Caribbean like beaches such as Es Trenc to Southeast Asian like ones such as Es Torrent de Pareis, it is fair to say that Mallorca really does have it all.
With this in mind, cycling holidays are becoming more and more popular in Mallorca. It’s fast become known to expert (and non expert) riders throughout the world, as one of the best places to cycle. During low season in particular, the beautiful Balearic island welcomes thousands of cyclists who enjoy the warm weather and excellent roads which are well maintained, not to mention the second to none scenery.
The Formentor Peninsula contains the most well known roads in Mallorca and is frequently voted as a standout amongst the most wonderful regions of Spain. Beginning from Port Pollensa, it is 19 km long and twists over the undulating landscape, with some of the best views of the Mediterranean Sea. The road finishes on the Cap de Formentor, from where there are incredible views over Pollensa Bay to the Alcudia Peninsula, and on a clear day Menorca is also visible. During the summer months you may encounter some traffic on this road, however if you set off early or visit in the off season (October – April), you will most likely see more bikes than cars.
If Formentor Peninsula is the most popular road in Mallorca, in our opinion, Sa Calobra is a very close second. It is in the heart of the Tramuntana Mountains and stretches down to the small port of Sa Calobra. It is 11 km long and once you have descended the distance there is only one way back and that is up the same road unless you want to take a boat back from Sa Calobra to Port Soller. If you like cycling and mountains then this route is perfect for you.
